Development of sustainable heat and power, fuelled by biomass from short rotation coppice in Wales

Renewable Energy and the Biomass Supply Chain

Wales is committed to a target of 10% of its electricity being generated from renewable sources by 2010. This will come from a combination of renewable energy sources; one of these will be BIOMASS. This includes the use of waste wood, forest products and energy crops.

It will be important that a market and associated systems of transport and processing of willow is developed in parallel with production capacity. Market outlets are potentially of three types:

  • Small scale wood heating or combined heat and power boilers, typically up to 2 MW
  • Medium sized biomass power stations, typically 5-20 MW
  • Existing coal-fired power stations incorporating biomass into the fuel source. Typically 1000-4000MW.
